This resource can serve as a complete mini-lesson/follow-up for introducing modal auxiliary verbs. It is also a great way to review modal auxiliaries before testing.
Modal auxiliaries covered In this resource include:
can, may, might. will, would, could, must, shall, should. and ought to
Also included are the examples of modal auxiliaries functioning as modals of:
obligation & advice
Additional PRINTABLE reinforcement activities have also been provided and include:
MODAL SORT ACTIVITY
Students read each card, find the modal auxiliary, and sort by category depending upon how the modal auxiliary is used in the sentence, ability, advice, etc.
MODAL AUXILIARY WRITING ASSIGNMENT
Students select a card and use modal verbs to write a response based on what the card says.
Both of these assignments will work well as independent or small group assignments.
PRINTABLE STUDENT ANSWER DOCUMENT
This component is included to assist with student accountability- as we all know, sometimes it is necessary to have a visual tool in place to remind students regarding their accountability for work due at the end of the work session. This type of document also works well for DIFFERENTIATED ASSIGNMENTS as well as DOCUMENTATION for authentic portfolio pieces of student work.
You can never have too many visual resources when it come to presenting concepts that you want to "stick"! Happy Teaching!
