Let's face it; modals challenge ESL students with their "special" grammar rules. In this activity, students will read a short text about studying for a university entrance exam with a focus on the modals used. Students work together to use context clues to discover what the modals express (ability, permission, prohibition, logical conclusion, etc.). They will also use the text to discover rules for the main verbs that follow the modals. An answer key is provided.
This activity was designed for intermediate-level adult ESL students.
