This is a great lab for showing the students the mode of reproduction of budding in yeast, a microscopic fungus. If you have students trained in the use of microscopes, they can actually see the yeast bud and separate with their own eyes. This also touches on the heterotrophism of yeast-- as they only bud when fed sugar and warm water-- or proof the yeast-- as possibly our grandmothers taught us. Hands-on labs provide experiences with abstract concepts that the students will never forget. Science Rocks with Smalley!
