This is an introductory lesson to start off your Model United Nation club or class. It will also serve as a stand alone lesson if your class is studying the UN and you want to deepen their understanding.
This activity will acquaint students with the need for a United Nations organization in addition to their stated purpose. This lesson is based on an inquiry approach to help facilitate students' own higher-order thinking regarding the complex nature of world issues and how the United Nations approaches these challenges.
In this lesson students will sort images of world issues into categories; they will also match these world issues to statements made in the United Nations Charter Preamble and Article 1. The objective is to clearly see the correlation between the world issues, or needs, and the purposes of the UN.
This lesson contains directions, student handouts, 21 images for the image sort activity, and an answer guide.
