This investigation journal is available in several grade levels. This is the 4th/5th grade journal.
This is a wonderful investigation exploring the two types of ways plants transport water. Students will model how vascular and nonvascular plants transport water. The investigation will help them understand how water gets to the top of a tall tree and spreads in nonvascular plants like moss. Students will follow the scientific method to answer the question:
Does the type of paper affect the distance water will travel?
Students will create a hypothesis, record observations, measure, perform 3 trials, calculate the mean,create a graph, and relate their results to plants. They will learn the importance of phloem, xylem, and lignin in vascular plants.

Fourth Grade: Structure, Function, and Information Processing
Teachers will like its’ ease of use, simple materials, and background information. Students will enjoy performing a hands on activity and understanding the differences in plants.
