A Smartboard Lesson
Using units, tenths and hundredths squares, students will first represent two decimal numbers and then use the models to add and subtract the numbers.
Using the models, students will discover that .3 or 3/10 is equivalent to .30 or 30/100. Students will observe the need to line up the decimal points on both numbers, rename numbers when carrying and borrowing.
Problems begin with adding and subtracting tenths and hundredths and moves to extend adding and subtracting to working with units, tenths and hundredths.
Included in the zipped file is a smartboard file, a full set of directions, and a template for place value.
Also available in my store are two sets of task cards on Addition and Subtraction of Decimal Numbers. Each set has 32 cards in 8 sets of 4 cards.
