Help your students understand the concept of fractions with the use of modeling with visuals! I have found that teaching fractions is tricky because students simply don't understand how they work. They get caught up in the procedural algorithms and forget about what they are doing and don't think about whether or not their answer makes sense! I carefully crafted each lesson to help students to really understand what fractions are and how to effectively work with them. *ideal for grades 5 - 7*

This product includes a full unit on teaching fractions through the use of visual models. There are 12 full no-prep lessons. Each lesson includes 2 pages of notes (notes include visuals, common core-type word problems, and algorithms), 1 page of homework (homework is very similar to class notes pages), and full answer key (complete with more models!). Unit study guide and assessment also included! Problem solving and critical thinking incorporated into each lesson and homework assignment.

Topics included (in this order):

Day 1: Fractions and Decimals: How are they related? (using base 10 blocks)

Day 2: Equivalent Fractions (using base 10 blocks)

Day 3: Equivalent Fractions (using the giant one) (algorithm)

Day 4: Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions (using unit bars)

Day 5: Adding Fractions with Like Denominators (using unit bars)

Day 6: Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators (using unit bars)

Day 7: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators (finding and using the LCM) (algorithm)

Day 8: Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers with Unlike Denominators (algorithm)

Day 9: Multiplying Fractions (using an area model)

Day 10: Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers (algorithm)

Day 11: Dividing Fractions (using unit bars)

Day 12: Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers (algorithm)

Day 13: Study Guide

Day 14: Unit Test
