Part 1 of this activity asks students to use Oreos (Cells) and sprinkles (chromosomes) to model mitosis. They then copy their models to paper and write a brief explanation of each Oreo and answer analysis questions. Part 2 asks students to watch a brief video of the relationship between mitosis and cancer, and answer analysis questions. As I'm sure you know... nothing gets students more motivated than food.
In accordance with the new NGSS standards, this does not cover rote memorization of the phases of mitosis, but on conservation of DNA and mitosis' role in growth and repair... and cancer.
I have uploaded it in a .docx format so you can modify and differentiate to fit your classroom and students' needs. Enjoy!
NGSS HS-LS1-4. Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms.
