This webquest can be completed individually, with partners, or in groups. The purpose is to clarify students understanding as to what scientific models are, and how and why they are used by scientists.
Next Generation Science Standards require students to begin working with models in kindergarten and continue to expand on their knowledge of and experience with models through 12th grade. This activity accesses the student’s prior knowledge and guides them through exploring information, examples, and videos about models.
Students follow a scenario to help a student understand how he and another student could earn the same grade on an assignment to make a model, when the two products are completely different. Students explore websites, create a graphic organizer, fill in a chart, and answer some questions.
A scoring rubric is included.
