In middle school, we often hear students say that there is no place for poetry in the digital age. As an attempt to get my students thinking critically and to prove to them there is still a place for poetry in our technology-driven world, I created this poetry exploration unit to get them to write some original poetry, become teachers, and use a digital platform to share their writing.
This unit includes a three week lesson plan for the unit, including guiding questions, authentic writing opportunities, research opportunities, and cooperative learning. Students work as groups to research various poetry types, teach them to their group members, and work together to publish their own writing. Students will no longer have a chance to say "But when will we use this?" because they will have new skills they can take from this unit focused on authentic writing.
