Modern Masters is a BBC documentary series written and presented by Alastair Sooke. The series was broadcasted in 2010. Each of the four one hour episodes examines the biography of an artist and his key work through Sooke's considerations and some reenactments.
Great 2-day activity for your substitute teacher!!!!
In this episode, Pablo Picasso's life and art are featured. Alastair Sooke comments on a view of Picasso’s pieces: Guernica, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, The Three Dancers, Dove of Peace. This guide comes with 35 fill-in-the-blank questions to help the viewer follow the documentary. An answer key is provided. The video can be found on YouTube.
The worksheets split the movie into two equal halves. I have had tremendous success with these worksheets. The students stay fully engaged while watching the movie. The fill-in-the-blank questions are in sync with how the documentary is presented. This approach maintains attentive listeners because the students are anxiously waiting for the next upcoming answer.
This activity is perfect for any Studio Art class, Art History class, and European History class.
Warning: I would recommend this documentary to high school juniors or older. Please preview this documentary before showing to high school freshmen/sophomores.
