A Rose for Emily is the classic tale of Southern Heroine turned grotesque, complete with the classic grotesque death and decay of the setting that is stereotypical of the Southern Gothic Genre.

I have created a simple chart style handout outlining characteristics of Southern Gothic writing characteristics. Once students have read the short story, "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, they will analyze the Southern Gothic elements of American Literature and find the hidden symbolism.

Creative Writing Prompt: Choose a character from “A Rose for Emily” and retell one of the anecdotes from his or her point of view.
