Ideal for AP or Honors classes, this activity requires students to compare and contrast three modernist poems ("As the Cat" by William Carlos Williams, an excerpt from "“The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot, and "Fog" by Carl Sandburg). Several Core Curriculum Standards are addressed including comparing and contrasting texts with similar themes, understanding elements of poetry and figurative language, and relating texts to their relative historical background.
The packet includes two printable handouts.
1) one-page handout with all three poems and a brief description of Modernist and Imagist poetry.
2) two-page handout with guided questions to assist students in breaking down the poems (great for accommodating students needing remediation or additional aids) and a three-circle Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the three poems
The assignment could easily be expanded into an explication or analytical essay.
