If you teach in any state that uses the SBAC common core assessment, you might find the writing rubric for the performance task cumbersome and impractical for quick grading of student writing due to the purpose/organization portion of the rubric being separate from the evidence/elaboration and conventions portion of the rubric. Literally, the SBAC rubric provided to teachers is 3 pages. 3 PAGES!
I created these TWO RUBRICS (you choose which one you like and feel free to modify it further) to break down the Smarter Balanced rubrics into more student friendly language and a more teacher friendly format.
I use them throughout the year when I grade student writing, particularly argumentative essays. Additionally, the rubrics are designed in a way that students grade themselves first before submitting their final paper. There is also a reflection section which requires students to justify the scores they have given themselves. It's amazing how the reflection helps students recognize their strengths and weaknesses.
This rubric has made grading easier for me and has vastly improved the writing of my students. Grading writing doesn't mean the teacher has to do all the work! :)
