A simple lab setup that gives students hands-on experience with moles and recaps fundamental chemistry concepts! Six stations are set up with materials commonly found in chemistry labs. I have my students determine the chemical formulas of the substances described at each station as well as their molar masses before allowing them to enter the lab. 3 of the stations require students to calculate the amount of moles of a given substance contained in plastic sandwich bags. I measure and write the mass of the empty bag onto the bag before adding the substance. The other 3 stations require students to calculate a mass amount from a given mole amount, and then measure out the mass amount as per instructions. I use very small diameter test tubes for the height measurement portion. The iron that I use is iron filings.
