This lab is a fun activity using molecular models! Your students will form monomers of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Then they'll join with another team and bond them together using dehydration synthesis. You also have the option of having many teams bond their monomers and make very large molecules!
This is a 7-page document with diagrams of the monomers showing exactly how to build them. Instructions are also included for doing the bonding via dehydration synthesis. The only materials required are sets of molecular models for each team. I pool all of my sets into a common area, dividing them up by atom type. That way each team can just come and get what they need for each monomer.
This lab is appropriate for Introductory Biology or a more advanced class, and may also be used for a Chemistry class. My students have a lot of fun with this lab and I hope yours do too!
