In this SIMPLE, FUN and ENGAGING lab, students investigate how heat and temperature affect the movement of water molecules using food coloring!! Teachers address the NGSS Performance Expectation MS-PS1-4. Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed.

Lesson Overview:

  • Students draw simple models that they think explains what happens to water molecules as water is heated and thermal energy is added.
  • Students collect data by observing what happens to water as blue and yellow food coloring is dripped into a beaker of cold water and a beaker of hot water.
  • Students revise their initial models
  • Learn that the speed and density of water molecules change as heat is added and removed.

It is a great inquiry-based lesson that leads into solids, liquids, and gases as well! It can be used as a single lesson or created into a unit with other resources that provide students with more evidence to evaluate their initial models. This lesson also includes a teacher prep, conclusion questions, and an answer key!

It aligns with the following NGSS Next Generation Science Standards Performance Expectation:
