This is a fun activity to introduce the concept of moles as units of measure to your chemistry students. It takes little teacher preparation and the only material you need is a pack of sidewalk chalk.
Student first predict how many moles of chalk are in their names, then they mass the chalk before and after writing their names on a sidewalk.
They use their data to calculate the number of grams, moles, formula units and atoms in the chalk in their names.
They wil evaluate their predictions and make a definition of what moles are in their own words.
The activity is written "cookbook" style, however you can have students use it to record data and write a formal lab paper if you choose. There is also an optional challenge question for the sharper kiddoes that need more challenges.
My students love this activity and rate it the top five fun things we did and learned all year! I would love to hear how you use it in your class!
