I used these Mona Lisa posters last year in my 6th grade classroom and they worked great! I decided to share my design here on Teachers Pay Teachers.
I got the idea from a fellow teacher while doing my student teaching. The world famous painting, "Mona Lisa" by Leonardo Da Vinci is a great tool for teaching social cues, correct behavior, and listening skills to Elementary and Middle School students.
How it Works:
- On the first day of class, I show students a picture of the Mona Lisa and ask them to tell me what they see Mona Lisa doing (her eyes are looking ahead, her mouth is closed, her hands are in her lap, and she appears to be sitting down)
- Next, I have a volunteer come up to the room to model how this works. I have the volunteer say, "Mona Lisa" and I (the teacher) sit down quietly with my hands to myself, mouth closed, and eyes looking at the volunteer. Students get a kick out of this.
- Next, I have students practice with me 2-3 times until they understand that when I say, "Mona Lisa!", they are expected to start listening to what I have to say. Make sure to praise students who do their best Mona Lisa impression.
- This is the kind of behavior reminder that takes practice. I found that if I use "Mona Lisa!" at least 3 times per class per day, they get it every time. I've even had kids use it outside of class!
Using the Mona Lisa approach might seem a little tiresome at first, but it sure beats struggling to get student's attention on a daily basis. Most of my students really seemed to enjoy this technique because it was so different than their other classrooms (where many teaches might yell "Quiet!" or have to flick their lights on and off to get student's attention). Wouldn't it be nice to just say, "Mona Lisa!"?
