Are your students interested in Monarch Butterflies? Have you discussed how the monarch species is solely dependent on only one type of plant? Do you know there are other butterfly species that are also dependent on only one plant for sustaining their lives? It's true! Use this venn diagram to compare two species of butterflies, the Monarch and the Karner Blue, who both are dependent on only one type of plant. The monarch has garnered quite a lot of press within the last year. I have taught my garden club students about the Monarch Life Cycle, habitat requirements, and conservation issues for the last ten years (not just recently)! This activity was developed to help students understand the importance of protecting habitat (mainly in the mid-west) with two popular and beautiful butterflies. Photos of a monarch, milkweed, and wild blue lupine are included. You will need to obtain a photo of the Karner Blue Butterfly, if desired. It is not necessary to have a photo of this butterfly to complete the activity. The chart (included) will help you, as the teacher, to correct and discuss the venn diagrams.
