This project is an essential lesson to teach Pencil Shading for ages 10 and up. It has two sections. The first part of the lesson is several exercises in How To Use Graded Pencils. There is a supply list to gather the equipment necessary, and several Instruction Sheets for the teacher to use in a particular sequence that builds confidence.
The second part of the lesson is to practice shading, without trying to make a finished drawing yet. There are many black and white photos in the project for the student to simply copy that have been chosen for the way they lend to learning the skill. This is one of those times when copying is the best way to train the eye to see the light patterns and the subtle differences between the shades of white, to grey, to black.
