Counting change is one of the most challenging things to learn in first and second grade. These cards offer children a chance to practice on their own and check their own answers. There are countless ways to use them.
Print cards with the picture answers on the back. Cut and laminate. Students try counting on their own, then flip it over to see if they are right. If they got it wrong they can follow the back and figure out what their mistake was. This would make a good math center.
During center time I call a few of my students up each day one at a time and have them try to count one or two cards. Its nice because you are not dropping fake money every where, but the cards have photos of real money front and back. Try to get in a little practice every day.
During class you can have students work in pairs, taking turns counting and checking their answers. I like this because more students are getting more practice at the same time. Not to mention it focuses my space cadets who don’t pay much attention when an individual is counting money displayed on the board.
Practice at home. Permission to email this file to parents for practice for your students IS allowed. It just cannot be shared with other teachers. If students are struggling ask their parents to print their own copies to practice for homework.
