In my pre-K/ kindergarten classroom, we use dots to help us learn to add money. The dot symbolizes 5 cents and we use the number one under the penny to remember to add 1. Under a nickel, your student would draw one dot because a nickel equals five cents. Under a dime, your student would draw two dots, and five dots under a quarter. Adding money is very difficult for children. To help them, practice counting by fives. Also don’t be afraid to let them practice counting real coins. This skill takes lots of work, and they need your help to master it.
