This activity is to be used in conjunction with Shel Silverstein's poem "Smart". Students will use each stanza of the poem to determine whether or not the boy in the poem is truly making a smart decision.
Students will use their knowledge of money, to draw (or cut and paste copies of coins), label, and compare the amounts of money in the poem. At the end of the assignment students will use their critical thinking skills and math vocabulary to determine whether or not the boy made a smart decision by trading his money.
This could be used as in independent assignment or a cooperative group lesson.
