Who broke Sam's piggy bank!

This smart board lesson walks you through the mystery of the broken piggy bank. Within the file is the story of what happened, three suspects, and the solution. You have the rights to edit the file so you can change character names, coin combinations, and values of coins.

Skills necessary to solve the mystery
-Coin identification (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter)
-Ability to sort and count mixed coins (up to \$ 2.00)
-Ability to add and subtract money (ex. \$1.75- \$1.00)
-Determine different combinations of coins for one sum

I used this with my first grade class and they LOVED the mystery. I gave them white boards and we went through the mystery as a whole group. It was a good chance for me to assess who could count mixed coins.

This lesson specifically relates to:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8
Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using \$ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?
