These word problems involve addition and subtraction (with and without regrouping) of money amounts. These cards meet second and third grade common core standards. Students can use a number line to solve various problems. When students use the counting up method of adding it is helpful to find benchmark numbers (numbers easy to count by such as 5, 10, and 25) it makes problem solving easier. Once students realize that using these benchmark numbers make counting up easier, they can begin to problem solve mentally. Coin and bill manipulatives can be used along with the number line as a visual tool for those students who need the extra support.
The Number Line Money Problem Solving Cards can be used in a whole group, partner, or center setting. The answer key can be placed at the center for students to self check. The students will need to show their work for every problem. The cards can also be posted around the room to use as a scavenger hunt. The kids will hunt around the room to find and solve showing their work on the recording form.
