This word problem worksheet has lots of problems for counting different coin combinations together and prompts students to show their work with pictures or skip counting. There are also harder problems at the bottom that require students to make change. Give this as a formative assessment at the end of a lesson, do half the problems together and some with partners or independently.
This directly meets the second grade Common Core standard for solving word problems involving money, but can be great for any lower or upper elementary grade.
Fun lesson idea: I also love cutting up the word problems and taping them around the room for students to find, and they can solve and record their work on their individual worksheets.
