Monitored Independent Reading Journals for 2nd graders
This is a daily journal where students are held accountable for their silent reading while building comprehension skills.
This is one of my favorite independent routines! I give a timer to a student as a "class job." The class will read for a set amount of time allowing me to pull small groups! When the timer goes off, all the students respond to the comprehension question of the day based on the book of their choice.
I like to "spot" check 2-3 journals a day and reward good responses.
I would suggest to copy these back to back and if possible spiral bind with a piece of card-stock as a front and back cover. They will last all year.
I have done silent reading for over 10 years and I didn't think much of it. However, when I added these comprehension questions which held the students accountable to their reading, I was amazed at their understanding and growth!
This is a must have!
