Teachers model by thinking out loud so students can listen and understand how to match the number card to the pictorial representation card. Project the slides so students can see the correct pair side by side. Have them explain what they notice and how the pair go together.
Have the class stand up in one big circle in the room. Give each child one card. When the teacher says, “Go” each child will start to circulate around the room to find the card that matches what they are holding. They have to justify their thinking when they show the teacher the pair they are sharing.
Students can use the printed cards to play a matching game at a Math Station. The cards can also be used as a 'go fish' type of card game and as an 'old maid' type of card game.
