Teachers model this Place Value by thinking out loud so students can listen and understand how to count bean sticks and beans that are representing Tens and Ones. Students will look at the drawing and count the single beans that are representing the ones and then write down the correct amount. Then they will count the bean sticks that are representing the tens and write down that number in the tens section. Ask students to notice how many beans have been bundled or captured on the bean stick. Help the students move to automatically knowing that the amount on the stick is 10 and doesn’t need to be counted every time. This work can be introduced to the whole group and continued in small guided groups as well as math stations. There is a student response sheet that can be used for student accountability of work, informal assessment, or formal assessment.
