Description

This lesson is designed for young learners to introduce the following artistic concepts:

monochromatic painting (one-color painting)

tint (color mixed with white)

positive and negative space

lines (horizontal, diagonal, vertical, wavy, zig zag, etc.)

line design (balanced from left to right)

printing a border

Use this presentation to lead your students through the steps to make a monochromatic heart painting. You can make heart stencils, have students draw free-hand hearts with a line in the middle, or you can print the template I provided on slide 3.

Materials: paper with heart design, tempera paint, paint brushes, white paint to mix a tint, a toothpick or wooden stylus to etch a line design into the wet paint. The border was printed with foam stamps. We painted the stamps with a brush to keep our fingers clean.

Hint: I had a student from each table randomly choose a color from a “hat” to decide which monochromatic color scheme their table would paint. The choices were red, magenta, orange, blue, green, purple. This helped with paint management and made the results beautifully varied. We trimmed the painting and glued it to construction paper of the same color family and added a printed border.
