James Monroe made a bold foreign policy decision in issuing his doctrine that warned European powers to keep their "hands off" North and South America.
This Common Core-aligned lesson begins with a review of U.S. foreign policy up to 1820 including Washington's Neutrality Proclamation, Washington's Farewell Address, the XYZ Affair, the Louisiana Purchase and the War of 1812. Then students read a brief passage providing background information leading up to the issuing of the doctrine. Then students analyze two primary sources related to the Monroe Doctrine: actual excerpts from the document and a political cartoon related to it.
