Product Description
October is my favorite month of the year!

Each year I have challenge students to write articles for my "Transylvania Times" newspaper that I (or actually my friend Witcheena) edits for us to read on the last day in October.

It's completely optional but most students enjoy the challenge. They get coupons for writing fantasy/space/monster stories, monster travel, sports, or fashion articles, Dear Scabby letters (with replies) that give advice to solve monster problems, and Haunt Ads that buy or sell monster goods. They can create monster cartoons, mazes, or puzzles.*

The coupons are used to estimate the number of "monster munchies" in my jar. It's a large jar filled with penny candy from the Dollar Store. It's a math activity and a language arts activity! The more you write or create, the more estimates you can submit!

On the last day of October, we sort the slips of paper with guesses and tape them together to create a bar graph. We count the munchies (yes it's every piece not every package so Smarties are my favorites as there are many in each package), and then name the person with the closest estimate. It can be a great opportunity to talk about how to estimate accurately. Students share their strategies.

While we read our Transylvania Times newspaper, the winner shares the candy with classmates (three to each person). There's a bonus of a gift card for books when we buy through the book club so the winner is happy to share treats and doesn't go home with a gallon zip bag of sugar. :-)

In addition to the introductory letter, you'll find a template for creating the newspaper, just copy text for the stories and paste.

Just for fun, I've included simple math worksheets, desk tags, bulletin board borders, and a calendar all that feature monster clip art.
