Monster Portraits is a very simple activity with a three-step process: 1) Brainstorm vocabulary, 2) Draw monsters, 3) Describe monsters for other students to draw.
No preparation is necessary except printing the worksheet. Example pictures are included (but not necessary) in a PowerPoint file to show the students.
Monster Portraits can be completed at any language-ability level (from basic-level ESL/EFL to native speakers) and any age (from third grade through adults, or even younger with more guidance). The only differentiation of instruction is the amount of of guidance and control the teacher retains in the classroom. For higher-ability-level students, the teacher can let the students complete the activity in small groups or pairs; for lower-ability-level students, the teacher can guide the brainstorming process and facilitate one student describing their monster while other students draw their versions on the blackboard.
The focus of the brainstorming is adjectives and body parts. There is a vast amount of flexibility for what words can be used. The teacher can purely elicit words from students or can teach new vocabulary.
This product includes the worksheet file (.doc) and the example pictures file (.ppt).
