Everyone do 'The Monster Mash!' What elementary student doesn't like monsters? Motivating students to write is often difficult, so making the writing process fun is absolutely necessary. This writing unit goes through the entire process of writing a short story about a student created monster.
This unit includes the following elements:
-A review of several of the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing
-An organization rubric so students will know what the daily expectations are
-Self- assessing questions at the end of each lesson
-Daily share time to improve student discussions about writing
Day 1: I can create a main character for my short story.
Day 2: I can describe my main character using all 5 senses.
I can identify character traits of my main character.
Day 3: I can brainstorm possible problems the main character will face and explain how he/ she will solve them.
Day 4: I can write the bold beginning of my short story including the characters and setting.
Day 5: I can write the mighty middle of my short story using details about the events that take place.
Day 6: I can write the excellent ending of my short story and show how my character solves the problem.
Day 7: I can edit and revise my short story with a peer to make it better.
Day 8: I can use good presentation in my writing when writing a final copy of my short story.
