This is the first novel that I teach each year. This teaching unit allows my students to immediately become engaged in reading a novel and allows them to become invested in a novel via the various alternative reading comprehension activities. I teach high school students with varying academic abilities. Noting my educational setting, I have developed my own version of a cafeteria of assignments which includes various options for length and intensity of both reading passage and assignments. My assignments are designed to be easily differentiated based on student academic ability levels. Additionally, I utilize poetry, music, guest speakers, and field trips to delve deeper into the novel. Please take a look at some of my sample assignments.
