Product Description
Monster by Walter Dean Myers Cell Block Soundtrack Project

This project will help students make connections beyond the text based on the themes and ideas in the novel as well as the character's feelings and experiences. This can be used as a final project or worked on as students’ progress through the novel.

Students will first compare the lyrics to two songs about prison and decide which of the two best reflects the messages in Monster and connects to the main character Steve. The song that they choose will new the first one listed on their soundtrack. Students will then choose at least nine other songs to add to their soundtrack. For each song students will list the song's title and artist as well as explain its connection to Monster. Guiding questions will help students select appropriate songs and explain their connections.

Students will select three songs from their soundtrack to write about, a paragraph per song explaining its connection to Monster. Each paragraph should include a quotation from the novel and a line or two from the song lyrics to support the connection between the novel and the song. Finally, students will design the cover art and track listing, the front and inside or back of a CD case, for their soundtrack.
