Monster by Walter Dean Myers - Menus of Activities Based on Bloom's Taxonomy

Included are six menus for Monster by Walter Dean Myers. The activities cover all six levels of Bloom's Taxonomy: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation. Each menu is divided up into four categories. You must decide upon the number of questions/activities you would like students to complete and insert that number for each category. This allows for differentiation for special education an advanced or gifted students. Students will then have a choice of the questions or activities they will complete in each section.

Students will answer comprehension questions, and analyze figurative language, flashbacks, repetition and symbolism. Students will make inferences and connections, draw conclusions, and evaluate the decisions and actions of characters. Finally, students will complete activities such as rewriting scenes from another character's point of view, developing a prison survival guide, illustrating key scenes from the novel, composing a “found” poem, and researching police procedures.

These are great activities to use during or after reading, or to help students review for a quiz or test. Students are able to complete the activities independently and really show you what they know, so this menu could also be used as an alternative assessment. Teaching duration depends on whether you do in class or out of class reading, what other activities or lessons you incorporate, and how much class time you want to give students to work on their menus as they could also be given as take home assignments.
