Students will act as wildly successful Genetic Engineers to design a “MONSTER” that has been genetically engineered to become the ultimate predator. They can use their knowledge of the adaptations that familiar organisms (plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, etc) have naturally developed as inspiration for the genetically engineered “monster.” The genes and traits that are manipulated into the DNA of the monster will help with their design.
Once a monster has been engineered, the creation will be randomly paired up with another creation. An ecosystem will be chosen at random. Each student's monster will battle with another class monsters to see whose Monster is the Fittest. The Fittest monsters will continue to the next round to be paired with another fit monster in a different random environment. The process will continue until there is a single monster left. This ultimate monster will earn the title of “The Fittest Monster.”
This activity will help students learn about animal adaptations in a fun and engaging way. This activity would complement a Biology or Life Science classroom well. An answer key is included.
