Monsturosas Multiplicaciones is a great activity for basic multiplication in 2nd grade. This activity does not require students to know how to multiply, but asks them to use the basic principles- either using arrays or repeated addition.
This activity is played like a game, where students roll a die to figure out how many arms, eyes, teeth, and tails their monster needs to have. Students can stop here, or draw their monster. They can also roll the die again to figure out what shape their monster must be... and lastly, you can extend the activity by providing students with materials for their monsters to come to life and become puppets!
This is a wonderful activity for a wide variety of abilities. This bundle includes four differentiated worksheets.
Generally, students are having so much fun, they do not realize they are working on the following standards:
Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
