The current update of the Visual Math Cards are designed to engage students in productive visual thinking. We have combined traditional Montessori Materials and the youcubed philosophy of Jo Boaler, to support visual processing and deeper mathematical understanding. Common Core State Standard alignment have also been added to each card.
Drawings, materials, and motion guide students through multiple representations of mathematical concepts. The students develop ‘grit’ as they use their new understanding to ‘grapple’ with extended questioning and powerful mathematical learning.
Math Extension Cards provide daily opportunities to practice math concepts. This repetition helps develop and maintain strong neural pathways. Facilitating the child’s understanding that symbols stand for real objects.
Montessori Math Extension Cards use didactic materials to guide students understanding from concrete to the abstract. At the beginning of each level, students are invited to participate in a teacher lead presentation. The teacher should use few words as s/he models proper use of materials and demonstrates step-by-step skills.
Each Activity card uses illustrations and simple instructions to remind the student of the proper step-by-step skills.
As the student progresses from card to card they build independence and increased automaticity.
*Review cards 1.a–1.j are designed to allow the student to “roam-in-the-known” as they become familiar with the daily math card process:
• identifying the assigned card
• gathering the materials
• completing the activity
• recording work in their Math Journal
• returning materials to the shelves
*Cards 2.a-2.m use finger discrimination and ten frame concepts to explore addition and subtraction within ten
*Cards 3.a-3.k understanding place value of units, tens, hundreds, and thousands, using the teen board, tens board, golden beads, and large number cards.
*Cards 4.a-4.d extend the counting sequence.
