Behavior charts are a great way to stay in communication with parents regarding great - and not so great - classroom behaviors. At the end of the day, I write a smiley face on their calendar to let parents know how their students day ended. There's also room in each daily box to write a short comment if you want (i.e. "Worked hard!" or "Very talkative today"). Instead of a smiley face, stickers or stamps may also be used.

I keep each student's behavior chart/calendar in a 3-ring binder that goes home, and comes back to school daily. Charts are not thrown away, so a record of the student's yearly behaviors are stored nicely.

I also reward my students with a trip to the treasure box, a small pack of gum, or extra time to be "teacher's helper" (whatever motivates the student!) when they get a certain number of smiley faces.

How do I manage classroom behaviors?

I use a "Clip Chart" in my classroom. Students can move down, and UP the chart when they either break a class rule, or display improved or exemplary behaviors. I love it because if a student moves down in the morning, they have the opportunity to move back up before the end of the day. This makes me feel not guilty about having a student move down, so I don't have to give out warnings all day. It keeps students accountable for their own behaviors. You can check out how to use a Clip Chart at www.newmanagement.com (click on the clip chart picture on the bottom of the page), or do a search on the internet. There are tons of valuable resources online (like themed clip charts!) to help you set it up!
