This is an open-ended alternative to “regular” homework which I have used successfully in my own classroom.
Each month, students are offered the opportunity to stretch their creative abilities by creating something – anything! – centered around a specific item. At the beginning of the month, hand out the creative challenge. Students bring in their creations any time during the month and/or share via posters, powerpoints, videos, etc. When students bring in their creations, encourage them to talk about how they generated their ideas, who (if anyone) helped them with the work, challenges they faced in making their creation, etc.
