This bundle includes 4 different reading response logs for read aloud texts to be used monthly. You also receive a basic checklist for grades 3-5 and K-2 and a sample of questions asked for an assessment with one novel (Eagle Song) with the 3-5 front-to-back version and a sample lesson plan using three different texts with the 3-5 flipbook version.
Help students track their thinking and see progress month-to-month. These Monthly Read Aloud Logs are aligned to the Common Core Reading Literature Standards and can be used across one novel or longer text, or used with different picture books, poems and more. You can choose blank boxes or lined boxes in the Grade3-5 versions to invite sketching, visualizing and writing as desired. The K-2 version includes opportunities for sketching and jotting.
How to use:
Printing: Use different colored paper for each month and store in a reading folder or portfolio to reflect and see progress over time.
• The K-2 version can be printed front-to-back.
• Two 3-5 versions can be printed front-to-back.
• One 3-5 version is more complex and can be printed in a flipbook style. Pages 1 & 6, 2 & 5 and 3 & 4 print front-to-back, respectively. Simply turn one page in the above page combinations 180 degrees before putting in copy machine so that you can fold and staple in the right order.
Organizing: In my class students keep these in a read aloud folder attached to their clipboards. At the end of the month, I collect and review their thinking and growth. Additionally, the tracking logs help students with class conversations beyond “turn and talks” during the read aloud and help them make progress in key areas throughout the entire year.
Assessment: Two or three times a year you can devote the month to assessment where you do not discuss the text in depth, but simply ask for students to respond to your prompts as they listen to the read aloud. By using this as a tool for instruction and assessment, both you and the students can see the growth over time. It is also great to support embedded test prep as students supply details and examples to support their thinking in grades 3-5.
These monthly comprehension logs pair perfectly with the Discussion Goal and Talking Tip Cards found here:
