This resource contains one reading log per month for August through June. I give my students a reading log to take home at the beginning of each month. For each text the student reads, he or she writes the title of the text on the log. Then, the student checks the box for how he or she read the text (i.e. Read by myself, Read with help, or Someone read to me). Lastly, the student colors in one, two, or three stars depending on his or her opinion of the text
(i.e. 1 star = I don’t like it; 2 stars = It’s okay; or 3 stars = It’s great!). I have included a page with additional rows, so you have the option to make the reading log double-sided. The extra page includes the reflection question: “Of everything you read this month, what is your favorite? Why?” When the log is complete, a parent or guardian signs the bottom. The student returns the log to school. I write specific comments on the log before I send it home for the student to keep.
Reading outside of the school day and maintaining a connection between home and school are so important. This reading log format is one way I am able to support both reading outside of school and the connection between home and school.
