Directions for implementation: Each month, print one copy of that month’s journal for each student in your class. Staple on the left-hand side to make a “book”. That’s all there is to it!
These journals can be used as a morning work activity or during guided reading groups. These journals get progressively more challenging as the year develops. In September, students will only be tracing the words “I see a”. In October, students will be tracing a full sentence. From November through May, students will trace a sentence AND write the sentence independently on each page. The sentences become more complex as the year progresses.
I suggest modeling use of these journals for kindergarten students before distributing for independent work. You may want to use this as the focus of a writing mini-lesson and demonstrate reading the sentence, tracing the sentence, writing the sentence, reading the completed sentence, and coloring the picture.
