Lake Learning proudly presents... Monthly Spelling Pre-Assessments!
This resource contains 9 spelling pre-assessment printables, one for each month of the school year.
#1-5: Every Monday, the students take a pre-test of the W.O.W. words (a.k.a Words of the Week). This shows the student, parents and teacher the words the child already knows and which words the child needs more practice with.
(These 5 W.O.W. words are selected each week from the Dolch list.)
Bonus Words A-C: The students who spell all of the W.O.W. words correctly on the pre-assessment get to choose 3 “Bonus Words” to practice throughout the week. I work closely with the students to help them select words that they often misspell in their personal writing. Sometimes, the students select words that they’ve always wanted to know how to spell. Both of these techniques help to make this a relevant, meaningful, and enriching task.
Practice!: Throughout the week, students are engaged in hands-on spelling practice. Much of this practice happens independently during the Word Work Station in our Daily 5 Literacy time.
Post-Assessment: On Friday, the students take the post-assessment to demonstrate their mastery of spelling the W.O.W. words. The post-assessment also includes several sections that highlight the students’ ability to transfer their knowledge into new words and sentence writing. Please see Lake Learning’s coordinated Monthly Spelling Post-Assessment resource for more details.
Data Notebook: Throughout this process, the students log results in their personal data notebook to promote accountability and help
them set personal learning goals. Please see Lake Learning’s coordinated Monthly Spelling Data Notebook resource.
