This curriculum was designed in partnership with the Central Valley Afterschool Foundation. While is was originally designed by me to be used in afterschool programs, it can be easily used in a school day setting. It contains enrichment lessons with extensions that can be easily implemented by an afterschool practitioner for an afterschool program for the month of August. For more lessons at a cost please contact me. The purpose of this curriculum is to provide for afterschool practitioners:
1. A series of lessons that have an intentional focus and align with the academic concepts from the regular school day.
2. Lessons that are easy to follow and implement.
3. Lessons that are truly enriching, innovative, hands on and engaging.
4. The essential information needed to be effective afterschool instructors who maximize the time spent with the youth.
The enrichment lessons are geared towards students in grades kindergarten through eighth and are inspired by monthly themes, holidays and special events. For each month, there are 4-5 lessons and each lesson indicates the grade level it is designed for.
Each lesson is quite comprehensive. Each lesson is aligned to California Content Standards for either English Language Arts or Math. More specifically, each lesson focuses on a heavily tested California Content Standard for the lesson’s grade level focus. In addition, each lesson is also aligned to Common Core Standards for the lesson’s grade level focus. Each lesson includes step-by-step instructions, time it takes to complete the lesson, a list of materials, vocabulary words to reinforce, recommended books for students to accompany the lesson, and an image to visually show the lessons outcome or process. Lastly, each lesson includes a list of extension activities to implement. The extension activities focus on the following areas and are color coded for easy recognition: English-Language Arts (light purple), Math (orange/yellow), Multicultural awareness (dark green), Parent connection (aqua/turquoise), STEM (yellow), English Language Learners (green) and Nutrition/Physical Activity (dark purple).
Each lesson is intended to take one enrichment period to complete or in other words at least one hour (certain lessons are longer). Each extension activity for a lesson is also intended to take at least one enrichment period to complete. This curriculum is designed so that if one lesson is implemented as well as all of its extension activities, that would provide a week’s worth or five days worth of afterschool enrichment activities/lessons. So the 48 lessons in this curriculum are designed to cover a year’s worth of activities; including summer.
