How can buildings tell us about culture?
In this lesson plan, students try to replicate a famous building from history using the block-building game Minecraft. Along the way, students simultaneously learn two suites of important skills. First, they learn how buildings inform us about past and current cultures. Inference, and understanding the intended meanings of buildings and their builders, is the heart of this lesson. At the same time, students also learn skills associated with modeling, representation, and making approximations. Because of the blockish nature of Minecraft, students can only pick certain elements of their buildings to reproduce. Students must prioritize their goals for their buildings as well as communicate the limitations and constraints they faced during building.
