Get an instant snapshot of your class each day as they enter the room! Students place a clip with their name (or assigned number) on one of four colored regions - red, yellow, blue, or green - to indicate their mood and their emotional readiness to learn.
The mood meter is an essential tool for building classroom community and fostering a growth mindset. Use the chart in classroom discussions to encourage students to enter class in a "green" mood - calm, pleasant, and focused - in order to create a safe and effective learning environment. Take note of students who are often in a blue, unpleasant, low-energy mood (sad, depressed, lonely) or in a red, unpleasant, high-energy mood (angry, irritable, anxious). Encourage these students to share their emotions and express their feelings in healthy ways. Students who may not otherwise know how to share their feelings or ask for help can be equipped to identify what they are feeling and receive the help and support they need.
I find this tool to be most useful for my "yellow" students - high energy, pleasant moods like excitability and playfulness are good, happy moods, but are not always ideal for learning! The Mood Meter gives me a positive way to redirect energy and encourage calmness and focus.
